“Seek understanding before you fall
into the sin of judgment,” is part of the life giving vocabulary of a Christ
follower. Sometimes it’s really
hard to think at all when we are hurting, much less respond in a life giving
way to those whom we think have just hurt us. Sometimes it’s also a challenge
to be life giving to those around us when we are disappointed, stressed or even
angry about the circumstance that we are facing.
So it happens, we speak out of our
pain. Then we get that feeling it in our gut. It starts speaking to us and
says, “I wish I had not said
that.” We think to ourselves I wish I had waited a few more seconds and asked a
few non-threatening questions before I erupted based on how things appeared.
Life, which is mostly about
relationships, takes time and a whole lot of ‘seeking understanding’. Having
the ‘first response’ to seek understanding requires a decision. The decision is
a line drawn in the sand of our life that we refuse to cross back over. The decision is, “to think the best
first.” In order to have life-giving relationships, it is one of the most
critical habits to master. It’s well worth the practice and emotional
investment. It keeps the “small things” small and allows the “big things” to
slowly come unraveled. We can do this because we are “loved by God and called
to be His own.” (Romans 1:7NLT)
Think the best and seek
understanding.
Be Life Giving!
